What is PJI?<\/b><\/h5>
Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is an infection that occurs around an artificial joint, such as a hip or knee replacement. It is a rare but serious complication that can affect the success of your joint replacement.<\/h5>
Signs and Symptoms<\/b><\/h5>
If you have a joint replacement, watch for the following signs:<\/h5>
  • Persistent pain or swelling around the joint<\/h5><\/li>
  • Redness or warmth over the joint<\/h5><\/li>
  • Drainage or oozing from the wound<\/h5><\/li>
  • Fever or chills<\/h5><\/li>
  • Difficulty using the joint as usual<\/h5><\/li><\/ul>
    \u00a0<\/b><\/h5>
    Diagnosis<\/b><\/h5>
    Doctors use a combination of methods to diagnose PJI, including:<\/h5>
    • Blood tests to check for signs of infection<\/h5><\/li>
    • Imaging, such as X-rays or CT scans, to assess the joint<\/h5><\/li>
    • A sample of joint fluid (aspiration) to test for bacteria<\/h5><\/li><\/ul>

      Treatment Options<\/b><\/h5>
      Treatment depends on the severity and timing of the infection. Options may include:<\/h5>
      • Antibiotics<\/b>\u00a0to treat the infection<\/h5><\/li>
      • Surgery<\/b>\u00a0to clean the joint (known as debridement)<\/h5><\/li>
      • In some cases, the joint replacement may need to be revised or removed temporarily<\/h5><\/li>
      • Rehabilitation<\/b>: physical therapy to regain strength and range of movement\u00a0<\/h5><\/li><\/ul>
